The Unesco World Heritage site The High Coast is by many considered the most beautiful area in Sweden, and one ofthe best examples of the characteristically Swedish landscape. With its favourably mild climate on the Baltic coast 450 km north of Stockholm, it bacame during the Middle ages the area of the northernmost outpost of the Swedish kingdom - with the town, bishopric, and administrative centre of Härnösand. North from here lay the colder and more rigid area of Lapland, which was not exploited until the mid 17th century with Linné's travels.
By 1850 with the construction of the railways and the mines in the north, the Sami population had moved north to the Lapland region of today.
The High Coast area was the world's largest exporter of wood products for the last decades of the 19th century, of which remnants such as industrial buildings, oversize harbours and mansions are visible still today.
